Odgovor Združenim narodom leta 1997 (B.B. Tirtha)

Peace at United Nations, New York, in June 97, as under :-

Object : World Peace

Peace : Freedom from or cessation of wars

World Wars: 1914-1918, 1939-1945. To ascertain the reasons + causes of world wars. When there are different centres of interest, clashing is inevitable.

Permanent Solution — Instructed by greatly spiritually elevated and realised souls

Temporary Solution — Instructed by wise persons of the world

1. Strong World Government

2. people should be trained to think that they are citizens of the world and not of a particular country.

3. There are many traditional beliefs, there are differences in the ways of living, different customs, religious beliefs — to find a solution to this — practical difficulty.

4. In fact, we find in every country, in spite of strong central Government at the centre, there are factional strifes, fights between religious groups, ethnic groups, etc.

5. Tolerance of others’ beliefs is essential

Permanent Solution — Given by Indian Saints, specially Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu — there should be knowledge of the real self, real interest and one centre of interest. If circles are drawn with different centres, circumferences will cross. If there is one centre, there may be small or big circles, there will be no crossing.

When there are different centres of interests, nobody can avoid clashes between individuals, groups, nations etc. For example, if circles are drawn with different centres, the circumferences are bound to cross each other. But if there is one centre of interest, smaller and bigger circles can exist without crossing. According to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, there should be knowledge of the real self, real interest and one centre of interest. Only God can be the common centre as all souls have emanated from Him.

Love for God thus translates into love for all beings, great or small. And if such a love exists, one cannot inflict injuries to anyone, as such a love makes everyone a part of you. If we truly love God, we cannot have the impetus to inflict injuries to any of His beings, who are all a part of the divine soul. All living beings are inter-related through their common bond with God.

Lord Krishna has said in the Bhagavad Gita (18.62) "O son of Bharat, surrender unto Him utterly. By His Grace you will attain transcendental peace and supreme and eternal abode." Only a complete and unconditional surrender to God can bestow eternal peace on us. The moment we submit to God unconditionally, all our ills and sufferings will go. Sense perceptions are delusional and create false egos, which lead to a clash of interest. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has said that if individual souls can have the knowledge that they are interrelated with God, the clash of interests will stop and everyone will live in harmony. Thus Divine Love is the best and only solution for universal peace. This Divine Love (prema bhakti) for God can be cultivated by 'nama-sankirtan', or the chanting of the Holy Name.

In the present age, 'nama-sankirtan' is the most effective way to achieve peace as it can be performed under any circumstance. In itself, it is a universal religion under which people of all sects can unite, irrespective of religion.

According to Lord Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Divine Love is the best solution to all problems in the world. Love is more powerful than non-violence. Non-violence means to abstain from doing injury to others – this is negative. But love means to do good to others – this is positive. We are not inclined to love others when we do not see our relation with them. Divine love means love of the Divinity and love of all in relation with Divinity.

When we do not see our eternal relation with the Supreme Divinity, Sree Krishna, and become averse to Him, His illusory energy envelopes us and we forget our real selves and real mutual love-relations. Being deluded by nescience, we are fighting amongst ourselves with false egos and false interests. Our interest lies in the service of the Supreme Lord Sree Krishna, Who is All-Existence, All-Knowledge and All-Bliss. This knowledge will solve all problems and bestow upon us, eternal bliss. When there are different centers of interest, fighting is inevitable. For instance, if we draw many circles on a paper, each with a different center, the circumferences will surely cross one another. But if we draw the circles – all sharing the same center, some may be bigger, some smaller, but there will be no crossing. That common center of interest is the Absolute Whole, Who is the All Unifying Spiritual Principle. As increase in number of the different centers of interest will increase group-clashing. Lessening of the different centers of separate interest will lessen the disagreements and ultimately, will culminate in surrender to the Absolute Whole, Which is the most elevated state of human thought.

As long as we consider this physical body and limited objects of this world our requirements, we cannot but quarrel with each other for the acquisition of the limited objects. When one person gets, another person does not get. Fights, jealousy, malice amongst the `haves' and have-nots' will surely ensue. But if our attention is diverted towards the "Unlimited, Infinite, Purna", fights for limited objects will stop. If one gets `purna', others will not be deprived. Infinite – Infinte = Infinite.

Lord Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu prescribed chanting of the Holy Name as the best effective practice for getting love of Krishna.

According to Lord Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Transcendental Divine Love is the strongest spiritual force on earth which can establish close relation of love and unity of hearts amongst all human beings and thereby establish real peace in the world. There is an outbreak of conflagration of group clashes throughout the world. Nowhere will you find peace. I am worried to read in newspapers the news of bomb explosions and disturbances. A section of people have become so violent and barbarous that they do not hesitate in committing heinous crimes in assassinating innocent persons to fulfill their political ends. All humanitarian considerations have been relinquished. They are now seeking justifications in committing such great sins. It is foolishness, stupidity and sheer ignorance to think that we shall be happy by injuring others. We shall not gain anything by resulting to violence – violence begets violence. Science also says, “To every action there is equal and opposite reaction.” If we inflict injury to any living being by body, mind or words we shall have to suffer and repent intensely for this. The Vedas say, “Ma hinsat sarvani bhutani – Don’t injure any sentient being”. If we do not want suffering we should not injure any living being.

Divine Love means love of the Divinity and love of all in relation to Divinity. We are not inclined to love others when we do not see our relation with them. Parents have got natural love for children. They are not to be taught for this. Lord Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu teaches us that all the living beings are coming out from the same source – Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. Living beings are the parts of the potency of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. If we love Krishna then we shall have love for all living beings automatically. Love is superior to non-violence. Non-violence means to abstain from doing injury to others, this is negative aspect, but love means to do good to others, this is positive. Lord Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s message of Divine Love has of late received universal appreciation in the world and people belonging to different countries, nations and faiths have accepted this.

When there are different centers of interests, nobody can avoid clashing of individuals, groups, nations etc. As for example, if circles are drawn with different centers, circumferences will cross, but if there is one center of interest there may be smaller or bigger circles but there will be no crossing. According to Lord Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu there should be knowledge of the real self, real interest and one center of interest. Supreme Lord Sree Krishna who is Achyuta (from Whom nobody can be detached) can only be the common center of interest from whom all the spirit souls have emanated.
If we pour water at the root of the tree, whole tree is nourished with all its parts, in like manner, by serving Krishna we serve all. Non-Violence is to refrain from doing injury to others – it is negative, but love is to do positive good to others. If anybody has got pure love to any person, he cannot have the impetus to inflict injuries to any part of the object of his love. If we get love for Krishna, we cannot have the impetus to inflict injuries to any of His parts emanating from His marginal potency. All living beings are interrelated through their relation to Sree Krishna.

Lord Krishna has said in the Bhagvat Gita (18.62) “O son of Bharat, Surrender unto Him utterly. By His Grace you will attain Transcendental peace and Supreme and eternal abode.” Complete unconditional surrender to the Lotus Feet of Supreme Lord Sree Krishna can only bestow on us eternal peace. The moment we shall submit to Sree Krishna unconditionally, our all ills and sufferings will go. Such submission is the best medicine for cure of all afflictions and the solution of all problems. False egos create false interests and by that clashing of interests we see the forest fire in this world. Supreme Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has said, if individual spirit souls can have the knowledge that they are interrelated with love relation, this forest fire of clashing of interests will stop. So Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has said, Divine Love is the best and only solution of the disturbed situation of the world. That Divine Love (Prema-Bhakti) for the Supreme Lord can be cultivated by ‘Nama-Sankirtan’ –chanting of the Holy Name of Supreme Lord, viz. Krishna, Rama, Govinda, Madhava, etc.

In the present age, ‘Nama-Sankirtan’ is the best medicine and effective way to achieve the summum bonum of human life as it can be performed under any sort of circumstances. Nama-Samkirtan is a universal religion under whose banner people of all sects and rank can unite. We are engaged in the propagation of the all-embracing doctrine of Transcendental Divine Love of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to counter the present trend of violence and cruelty and to bring unity of hearts amongst all irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

The root cause is false ego and false interests. The material world is finite, so if anybody gets some property, others are deprived of it. When human beings are taught that they are physical bodies, they all try to get requirements of the body and compete against one another for this. Actually the real self is neither physical body nor subtle material body. Being enveloped by the material energy they wrongly misconceive. So the Indian saints first tried for material property and afterwards they found it would lead to extreme suffering. Actually the requirement is Complete Bliss, Who is God - Purna-sukh - Absolute Bliss or Infinite Bliss. Infinite Sachchidananda is Infinite Bliss. If the attention of human beings is diverted towards Infinite bliss and if anybody gets this Absolute Bliss, others will not be deprived of it. According to differential calculus mathematics - Infinity minus Infinity is Infinity. Infinite living beings can get Infinite bliss. There is no possibility of clashing. When persons lost their interest for material acquisitions, they become indifferent to it and clashing with others for such things cannot occur.

As long as we shall remain in this world, we should be satisfied by getting minimum material possessions. Atma requires Atma for it's sustenance, not Anatma. Anatma is foreign to it. If one attains the property of one whole world, he will have the desire to get another. The material world is actually devoid of genuine bliss. The material world is the shadow of the Supreme Lord - who is All-Existence, All-Knowledge and All-Bliss. The material world is the outcome of Maya which means `not that'. Similarly the shadow of a tree has got no actual existence.

tasmad idam jagad asesam asat-svarupam

svapnabham asta-dhisanam puru-duhkha-duhkham

tvayy eva nitya-sukha-bodha-tanav anante

mayata udyad api yat sad ivavabhati

Srimad Bhagavatam 10.14.22

This entire universe is non-eternal, so it is dream-like (illusory), transitory (not permanent), devoid of knowledge, inert and extremely painful. But O Lord Krishna! You are All-Existence, All-Knowledge and All-Bliss and therefore Infinite. The entire universe has been created and destroyed by your inconceivable power, yet it appears to be truth actually existing.

The Supreme Lord is Supreme in all aspects. He is Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent and He is All-Bliss. By the grace of Absolute Bliss we can get complete bliss. Grace descends to a surrendered soul. All desires of the votary will be fulfilled if he takes unconditional total submission to the Supreme Lord.

Kaj pa vojne v imenu religije?

The religion that is prevalent now-a-days in this world
has been infected by politics. There is no place for violence in
religion. Religion teaches non-violence; it enhances loving
relations among living beings. But now-a-days, fanaticism has
entered in the name of religion. With this attitude, we fight
among ourselves and kill each other. We don’t even stop to
think if religion really teaches this. Actually, it is misuse of
religion. This is not religion. Our religious scriptures don’t
teach us so. In our country, the method of propagating Vedic
religion is to make people understand through logic and
argument, enlightening them about the pre-eminence of
religion, and thus putting them on the path of progress. Others
propagate religion through allurement; still others make
followers by frightening or killing people with weapons.
The only way for living beings to live together peacefully
is to develop loving relationships with other living beings, and
this is only possible if they know their real identity.

Kako v zvezi z vojnami v imenu religije? Iz konference svetovnih religij govor B.D. Madhava (vsi odgovori) :

The following speech was delivered at a " Spiritual Summit Conference" held by The Congress of World Religions. The conference took place from October 22 to October 26, 1968 at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Calcutta, India. This conference was organized by Sh. B.K. Birla and his wife Smt. Sarla Devi This Spritual Summit Conference was sponsored by the Temple of Understanding. (Washington D.C. U.S.A).

Representatives of the different religious faiths of the world, namely- Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Bahais, Jews, Confucians, Zoroastrians, etc. were invited to this summit.

Mr. Findly P. Dun, Secretary of the Conference came to invite Sreela Bhakti Dayita Madhav Gosvami Maharaja, and requested him to represent the Hindus. At the conference, Prof. Amiya Chakraborty of the New York State University, Dr. Houston Smith and other dignitaries had a detailed discussion with Him.

"I heartily welcome the organizers of this symposium in their attempt to explore an impartial and liberal approach to different views of religious faiths in this world and to find out how world-fellowship of different religions or a unity of hearts amongst human beings can be promoted. There are two ways of approach. (1) The sincere, real and practical approach having relation to the actual state of conditions and nature of human beings and, (2) An idealistic approach having little or no practical value merely indulging in the luxury of high-sounding words. If we sincerely want to obtain real and abiding effect, we should face facts boldly. The fact is that there exists no 100 per cent identity amongst individuals as they are conscious units having independence of thinking, feeling and willing, individuals, as a result of their different actions, achieve separate environments and paraphernalia. Every individual has his peculiar nature distinct form any other. So, obviously individuals will vary in their opinions and tastes and this is quite natural. It is an unnatural thing to attempt forcibly to encage individuals into one fold, faith or particular ideology. Accordingly cultivation of tolerance of others' views is essential for world-peace and unity. Indian sponsors of religion appeared to have got that insight and tolerance, hence many independent views have cropped up in India and have flourished simultaneously. Want of tolerance makes us sectarian and that spirit motivates us for forcible conversion of others which brings turmoil and unrest in the world. Religion should give equal scope to all the individuals for their respective spiritual development according to their attributes.

Indian saints have classified the nature of human beings in three broad groups-'Sattvika', 'Rajasika' and 'Tamasika'. Sattvika people are wise, sincere, generous and non violent. As such they have an altruistic mentality and render disinterested (*non-motivated) service. Rajasika people are egoists. However they are active and do good to others with the motive of getting a return of their actions for self-aggrandizement. They won't tolerate harm to themselves. They have got the spirit of taking revenge. 'Tamasika' people are indolent, out and out egoists and of violent temper. They are indiscriminate in their pursuit of enjoyment, they completely disregard the interest of others and will do anything to fulfill their selfish desires. So ,"Sattvika", 'Rajasika" and 'Tamasika' people vary in their tastes, habits and nature. Three forms of teaching religion have been prescribed for the three groups according to their eligibility, giving them scope for gradual elevation. These three modes of teaching are related to the apparent self, as such changeable. There are still higher and higher thoughts of religious existence which transcend those three qualities and relates to the eternal natural function of the real-self. If we want quantity, we must sacrifice quality and if we want quality, evidently we shall have to sacrifice quantity. Both cannot be achieved at one time.. However, the primary point to be noted here is that there should be tolerance amongst sponsors of different religious views and respect for other's views, as well as equal scope should be given to all for their spiritual upliftment from the respective status. Another point to be noted here is that we should have the patience to understand the underlying spirit of different religious faiths and not merely indulge in disputes in regard to the ritualistic aspects of religions which will certainly vary in different parts of the world in accordance with the change of climate conditions and environments.

Now-a-days, we find lack of discipline rampant in every sphere of human life-political, social, economical and even in educational. Student-unrest (youth-unrest) is one of the most serious problems of the day. It is extremely diffcult to proceed with the constructive work when people are prone to indiscipline. To fight against disruptive tendencies and indiscipline, a radical treatment of minds of the people is required. Here we feel the necessity of moral and spiritual values in human life. There are two ways of treating diseases-pathological and symptomatic. In pathological treatment root-cause of the disease is ascertained first and then the remedy is prescribed. The process of symptomatic treatment by be easier but it does not have a lasting effect, it may give temporary relief, while treatment through the pathological process brings about permanent relief.

To determine the root-cause of unrest we ought first to determine the meaning of the self. I strongly believe, that ignorance of our real-self is the cause of unrest, discord and anxiety. The real-self is not the physical tabernacle. It is something other than the gross and subtle bodies. We consider the body to be the person, as long as we observe consciousness in it. The moment the body is bereft of consciousness, it loses its personality. 'I' am 'I' when the conscious entity, i.e. the entity that thinks, feels and wills is present in me and 'I' am 'not-I' when it is absent in me. Hence the entity whose presence and absence makes me, 'me' and 'not-me' respectively, must be the person. The conscious entity (Soul) is designated as 'Atman' in Indian scriptures. 'Atman' is indestructible, it has no origin and no end. If we plunge deep into the matter, we can trace our existence with the Absolute Conscious Principle, whom we call Godhead, the Fountain Source of innumerable conscious units. Godhead is termed Sat-Chit-Ananda i.e., He is All-Existence, All-Knowledge and All-Bliss. Individuals are points of rays emanating from Him and as such one of His external co-existing potencies. Individuals cannot live independently. They are all interconnected and co-existing though retaining their own individual characteristics.

It has already been stated that differences in the individuals are unavoidable as they are conscious units. Now the problem is to find a common ground and interest for the solution of these differences. A sense of common interest can be fostered among individuals, if they know that they are inter-connected, are parts of one Organic System and are the sons and daughters of one Father. Here is the task of all religions; to teach people that all beings of the world are closely inter-related. Although steadfastness or firm belief in God (Nistha) according to some particular faith and eligibility of the individual is congenial for healthy spiritual growth of every individual, religious bigotry which begets enmity is condemnable, as it is against the real interest of the individual and society. Real religion teaches love for one another.

Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu propagated the cult of all-embracing Divine Love which brings universal brotherhood on a transcendental plane. According to Him forgetfulness of our eternal relation with the Supreme Godhead, Sri Krishna, is the root-cause of all afflictions. Sri Krishna is God of all gods, Supreme Persona having All-Existence, All-Knowledge and All-Bliss, Beginningless yet the Beginning of all and Prime Cause of all causes. The word "KRISHNA" means One Who attracts all and pleases all by His Wonderful Enchanting Beauty, Majesty, Munificence and Supremacy and this denotes the highest conception of Godhead with all perfections. He is the Object of All-love. So, remembrance of Sri Krishna or God is the Divine Panacea of all evils. The easiest and most effective way of remembering God is chanting the Holy name which can be practiced by all, irrespective of caste, creed, age, health, economic, social and educational status at any place or time.

In the Vedic Cult we find the theory of the cycle of time within the period of infinite time, which has go four stages in accordance with the predominance of religiousness and irreligiousness. The four ages are designated as Satya, Treta, Dwapara and Kali. In Satya Yuga (The first age of the cycle or time) wisdom predominated in men an as such they were aware of the painful and transitory nature of the world and thereby were not fascinated by it; concentration without interruption was possible and meditation (Dhyanam) was prescribed as the common religion suitable for all. In 'Treta Yoga' (next spiritually degraded age of the cycle of time) when the slirit of activity predominated and people were attached to worldly objects, Yajna (sacrifice) i.e. offering of the things of attachment to the Lord, was prescribed as the common religion to divert the attention of the people form material objects of attachment and turn their minds towards Him. In 'Dwapara Yga" (next and more degraded age) when people were addicted to worldly objects and sensualism, 'Archana' ( worship of Deities) was prescribed as the common religion for gradual attainment of concentration of the mind by directing all the senses and objects of attachment to His service. In the present age 'Kali Yuga' ( the last and spiritually most degraded age of the cycle of time), when people are firmly attached to wordly objects, are too much given to sensualism and always diseases, they are incapable of performing 'Dhyanam' {Meditation), 'Yajna' (Sacrifice) and 'Archana (Worship of the Deities) rightly and as such chanting of the Holy Name of God is prescribed for them.

Today the world is taking tremendous scientific strides. Modern scientists are performing wonders. But I spite of their marvelous accomplishments and despite their pride in Twentieth Century civilization, it is puzzling to see that science is so much engaged in inventing destructive weapons like atom-bombs, etc. and thereby imperiling the whole human race. Any moment there may be a conflagration and the whole world may perish. Saints are deeply concerned as to how to avert such a calamity. Mere material scientific accomplishments are unable to save the world from such a danger. Of course, scientific inventions or achievements as such are not condemnable. Everything depends on the proper use of things. Science may be used for the god of humanity and also may be misused for the destruction of human civilization. It is imperative to consider the problem and diagnose the disease of conflicts and mutual distrust amongst nations and individuals. So long as nations and individuals have separate centers of interest, tension is inevitable. Nobody can avoid it.

This world is limited. When there are many claimants for one limited object, disputes amongst claimants are unavoidable. It is because of this that Indian saints differ from the leaders of the west or from the westernized leaders of our country in their manner of tackling the problem of peace.. In fact, the genuine saints of the world are wise enough to see the fundamental defect in the attempt of the so-called best brains to achieve world-peace. They assert with great emphasis that a practical solution of the problems is not possible so long as the individuals do not change their present craving for sensuous enjoyment and greediness for mundane wealth and direct their attention towards 'the Unlimited', the 'Infinite, 'the Absolute'. The heads of different religious groups should clearly and emphatically point out and teach their followers the painful and perishable character of worldly objects and the futility of sensuous enjoyment. They should create interest in man for the worship of God which brings about real happiness.

Unless and until the eternal relationship of the people is known to them and they realize that they cannot exist and be happy without the Godhead, Who is All-Bliss, they natural inclination of the people towards the Godhead and diversion of their attention from the material aspects of life cannot be effected. As long as people have the conviction that their only interest lies in material prosperity and sensuous enjoyment, discord cannot be avoided. Mere belief in the existence of God will be of great benefit to humanity be restraining people from committing sins and teaching man to do good to others. They will have fear of punishment for misdeeds and encouragement to seek reward for good deeds. Want of patience and tolerance originates from lust. Any activity which leads to the satisfaction of one's own gross and subtle senses is termed lust. Hindrance to the fulfillment of lust breeds anger and that brings conflict, and malice amongst individuals and nations.

So long as people do not understand that they are inseparably connected, and until the activities of the people are God-centered, mere sentimentalism or fictitious ideas will not be able to foster real love amongst individuals.

If we know that the infliction of harm to other animate beings is detrimental to our own interest and will bring harm in return, we will not be encouraged to harm any individual, nay even any sentient being of the world.

If we can love the Absolute Whole, I mean the Godhead, we cannot have the impetus to injure any of His parts. So, according to me or the teaching of Lord Gauranga (Chaitanya), Divine Love is the best solution of all the problems of the worlds."
