He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not?

 

"Dave never tells me he loves me.

Sometimes I don't think he even cares,"

my good friend Bonnie told me over lunch.

Knowing the couple well, I told her,

"Bonnie, he really adores you. It's obvious."

"You really think so? After twenty-seven years of marriage,

things aren't like they were the first year or two."

"I know how you fell, but why don't you try something?" I asked.

"When you get home, start looking for evidence that he adores you

instead of evidence to prove he doesn't. Just for twenty-four hours. OK?"

Bonnie was quick to agree.

 

Bonnie phoned me the next day.

"Your idea worked," she almost shouted.

"When I got home, Dave asked, 'How was your lunch?'

I thought to myself: He wants to know because he adores me.

When he called me to come see the sunset,

I thought: He's doing this because he adores me.

In the middle of the night, I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep.

Dave asked if anything was wrong and started rubbing my back.

 

"Some funny things started to happen.

First, I noticed what a great guy he was.

How else are you going to fell toward someone who adores you?

And then, a little later, when he was grumpy,

I thought: He's grumpy, but that's all right, because I know he adores me."

 

"Good for you," I said.

"Wait. There's more. I began to fell differently about myself too.

I'm not such a bad person. In fact, I'm adorable." She giggled.

 

Bonnie learned she had the power to alter her perceptions.

She could have gone home to the same old marriage,

with her same old attitude, and things would have looked the same old way.

Because she would have been looking to confirm he didn't love her,

Bonnie would have missed all the love that was there.

 

Once, Bonnie used to ask, "Does he love me? Or does he love me not?"

Now she is amazed to discover all the creative ways her husband finds

to give her the answer that was there all along: "He loves me."
