Ninety-five percent of these pups are between two weeks and three months old. They are shot or clubbed and then skinned for their pelts.Canadian officials justify the hunt by saying that the seals are responsible for declining fish populations. But the real reason for the fish shortage is poor management and massive overfishing. Seal populations are also falling fast with more than half a million decrease over the last few years.Help put an end to the seal hunt once and for all by contacting Canada’s Prime Minister today! free 11. april 2007 Prijavi Deli 11. april 2007 http://img.getactivehub.com/gv2/custom_images/soe/wrapper_earthday.gif Last week I wrote to ask you to help save our polar bears which are being pushed to the brink of extinction by global warming. But polar bears are not the only ones in danger - global warming puts all the Earth's inhabitants at risk. The good news is that two groundbreaking new bills that aim to stop global warming were recently introduced in Congress. Earth Day 2007 is coming up on April 22nd. You can celebrate by urging your Members of Congress to support these two critically important pieces of legislation. Click here to send your Earth Day message now? These two bills -- the Sanders-Boxer Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act (S. 309) and the Waxman Safe Climate Act (HR. 1590) -- would help stop global warming by reducing emissions and promoting energy efficiency through the use of clean, renewable energy sources. They offer a clear first step to addressing the impending global warming crisis and we must support them. The consequences of unchecked climate change could be devastating. If we don't act now, we could face:- The loss of up to 50% of all species on Earth.- As oceans continue to warm, thousands of species will face extinction - not just the polar bear. - More frequent, more intense heat waves like the 2003 tragedy that killed 30,000 people in Western Europe. - Increased droughts and wildfires, especially in the Western U.S. - Increased flooding in coastal regions as sea levels rise. If seas rise by 80 feet, 50 million Americans could lose their homes. However, right now Congress has the chance to set us on a better course - by passing S. 309 and HR. 1590 and making sure these bills become law. Click here to urge your members of Congress to take the first step to fight global warming by supporting these bills? After the first Earth Day in 1970, Congress began to set anti-pollution standards for our air and water. Nearly four decades later the challenge has grown. Let's remind our Members of Congress to follow the spirit of Earth Day and take the measures needed to protect our environment and our future.Once you've taken action, please take a moment to forward this message to your friends, family, and co-workers to let every single Member of Congress know that we want them to support these bills that would halt global warming!Thank you for your help,Sincerely,Julie WatermanCampaign Director, SaveOurEnvironment.orginfo@saveourenvironment.org Citiraj free Blog Link to comment Deli na socialnih omrežjih Več možnosti deljenja...

Though emperor penguins may star in their very own movie, they are at risk because commercial fishing in Antarctic waters places increasing pressure on food chains and availability. Fishing for krill, tiny shrimp-like organisms, and small fish that are the primary food source for many larger animals in the ecosystem is risky business. Management that considers the importance of these forage species in the ecosystem is vital for the healthy future of our oceans. kukica 16. maj 2007 Prijavi Deli 16. maj 2007 This Friday, the finance ministers from the world's eight richest countries will meet to plan the G8 summit. That morning, we will send them an urgent letter on global poverty, signed by key global figures: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson--and, we hope, you. Our message: keep your promise to provide 0.7% of national income in effective aid to relieve extreme poverty. Millions of lives are at stake. The more people sign the letter, the more powerful our demand becomes. Click here to sign: http://www.avaaz.org/en/g8_poverty_letter The statistics of global poverty are shocking. Each day, 20,000 children die preventable deaths in poor countries. That's why the broken promises of rich countries are so infuriating. The world's rich countries have pledged 0.7% of their national income to development aid. But these promises have not been kept. In fact, outrageously, the G8 countries gave less in 2006 than in 2005. At the same time, the last few years have seen an unprecedented groundswell against global poverty--which has led to new promises and, in some countries, real change. These fights can be won. That's why we are working with our friends at the Global Call to Action Against Poverty to assemble citizens and celebrities behind a single call--for world leaders to keep their word on global poverty. Here's an excerpt from the letter: Together you represent the world's economic powerhouses. We write to ask that you also strive to represent the millions of people whose lives are blighted by extreme poverty. Aid is not a panacea. But Marshall Plan aid from the US kick-started the rebuilding of a Europe shattered by war and delivered real benefits to the US in terms of new markets for its goods. Aid to East Asia helped catalyse the economic miracles that have lifted millions of people out of poverty. Today many African governments are using aid to underwrite growth and provide essential schools, health services and water supplies for their people. The poorest countries in the world need you to honour these aid pledges if they are to meet the Millennium Development Goals and end poverty. Please seize that chance today. The letter will be delivered Friday with big ads in the Financial Times and German press, just in time for the G8 finance ministers' meeting. In the last day alone, over 150,000 of us have surged to the global rescue -- calling on the world not to give in to wrecking tactics by the governments of the US, Canada and Japan. We’re putting a full-page ad in the Jakarta Post’s summit edition where all the negotiators will see it, warning them to avert Titanic-like disaster -- and we’re coming together with other NGOs to deliver millions of signatures for climate action to governments. I’m writing from the main hall at Bali, where Al Gore just said it’s time for “a global people power movement” to step in. He’s right. Our new global emergency petition brings us directly into the main battle at Bali -- and there’s no question that delegates here are watching what we all do. Last week, things in Bali looked good: near-consensus on a delicate framework of 2020 targets for rich countries, in return for which China and the developing world would do their part over time. IPCC scientists have said such targets are needed to prevent catastrophe. But Japan, the US and Canada are banding together to wreck the deal.
