The Canadian government will authorize hundreds of thousands of seals to be killed this year as part of its annual commercial hunt. Ninety-five percent of these pups are between two weeks and three months old. They are shot or clubbed and then skinned for their pelts.

Canadian officials justify the hunt by saying that the seals are responsible for declining fish populations. But the real reason for the fish shortage is poor management and massive overfishing. Seal populations are also falling fast with more than half a million decrease over the last few years.

Appeal to Helen Clark, Prime Minister of New Zealand

Hector's and Maui's are New Zealand's marine Taonga (treasure). However, they are rapidly facing extinction due to human impacts. The substantial decline in Hector's dolphin numbers and distribution over the past 30 years and the considerable and continuing threats facing the species necessitate urgent action from the New Zealand government.

By law, the New Zealand government is required to protect its native flora and fauna. However, the government has never developed an action plan for the recovery of Hector's and Maui's dolphins.

If protection measures are not adequate then Maui's may become extinct within your lifetime.

For these reasons I call on you to immediately:

* Implement an effective action plan for the recovery of the species

* Introduce a total ban on set nets within the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)

* Introduce a total ban on trawling in near shore waters shallower than 100 metres in depth

* Identify, manage and mitigate all other potential threats to Hector's and Maui's to ensure their future recovery.

Last week, Congress passed an emergency supplemental funding bill which includes $150 million to support the peacekeeping effort in Darfur through the end of September.

While we applaud this decision, we are very concerned that this funding will run out on October 1st, leaving peacekeeping forces in Darfur stranded without adequate resources.

The Administration has failed to request any funding for Darfur in the fiscal year 2008 budget, which starts at the beginning of October 2007.

Last week I wrote to ask you to help save our polar bears which are being pushed to the brink of extinction by global warming.

But polar bears are not the only ones in danger - global warming puts all the Earth's inhabitants at risk.

The good news is that two groundbreaking new bills that aim to stop global warming were recently introduced in Congress.

These two bills -- the Sanders-Boxer Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act (S. 309) and the Waxman Safe Climate Act (HR. 1590) -- would help stop global warming by reducing emissions and promoting energy efficiency through the use of clean, renewable energy sources.

They offer a clear first step to addressing the impending global warming crisis and we must support them.

 

The consequences of unchecked climate change could be devastating. If we don't act now, we could face:

- The loss of up to 50% of all species on Earth.

- As oceans continue to warm, thousands of species will face extinction - not just the polar bear.

- More frequent, more intense heat waves like the 2003 tragedy that killed 30,000 people in Western Europe.

- Increased droughts and wildfires, especially in the Western U.S.

- Increased flooding in coastal regions as sea levels rise. If seas rise by 80 feet, 50 million Americans could lose their homes.

However, right now Congress has the chance to set us on a better course - by passing S. 309 and HR. 1590 and making sure these bills become law.

A new Bush Administration proposal to strip gray wolves of federal protection would pave the way for mass killings of wolves in Yellowstone's wild country and central Idaho. This reckless plan would turn over wolf management to state agencies. Idaho is already gearing up to kill off the majority of its wolves. With oil and gas drilling, logging and road building chipping away at crucial wildlife habitat across the Rockies, leaving wolves unprotected could drive them back to the brink of extinction.

Fishing for krill, tiny shrimp-like organisms, and small fish that are the primary food source for many larger animals in the ecosystem is risky business. Management that considers the importance of these forage species in the ecosystem is vital for the healthy future of our oceans.

The violence in Darfur is getting worse. More than 80,000 Darfurians have been displaced in recent months and increased fighting has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians.

 

Right now, China should be focused on getting peacekeepers on the ground in Darfur. Instead they appear to be monitoring our computer systems.

 

We cannot let China turn away from the genocide in Darfur. China must use its influence to pressure the Sudanese government to stop the violence.

As a member of the UN Security Council, China has enormous leverage over the peacekeeping mission. However, instead of using its leverage to advance peace, China continues to defend Sudan's interests, expand trade, and bolster the Sudanese government's military capacity.

 

We can't be fooled by the aggressive propaganda campaign launched by China in advance of the 2008 Olympics. While China has made a few modest steps forward, these efforts have not improved conditions in Darfur.

 

China's "special representative on the Darfur issue," Liu Guijin, must do everything in his power to push the Sudanese government to allow the swift, full and effective deployment of the UNAMID peacekeeping force.

The world food crisis is skyrocketing

 

– steadily rising prices are squeezing billions and triggering food riots from Bangladesh to South Africa.

Aid agencies say 100 million people are facing starvation.

 

In response, the United Nations is convening an emergency summit of world leaders in Rome this week. There is a real danger that rich country leaders will push half measures and band-aid solutions – we need a huge global outcry to demand rapid, massive, coordinated action.

 

The head of the UN, Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, will receive our petition at the summit at 9:30AM on Wednesday morning.
