ABANDON HOPE (AND FEAR)

Hope
and fear is a feeling with two sides. As long as there’s one, there’s
always the other. This is the root of our pain. In the world of hope and
fear, we always have to change the channel, change the temperature,
change the music, because something is getting uneasy, something is
getting restless, something is beginning to hurt, and we keep looking
for alternatives.



In a nontheistic state of mind, abandoning hope is an affirmation,
the beginning of the beginning. You could even put “Abandon hope” on
your refrigerator door instead of more conventional aspirations like
“Every day in every way I’m getting better and better.”

"Pred sivo glavo vstani, prikloni se pred obličjem starega človeka", je zapisano v Levitiku, kajti obraz je prvo znamenje, po katerem se ravna etika neke družbe. Po kateri etiki pa naj se navdihuje Zahod, če je starajoči se obraz kirurško zglajen in zakrit s kozmetično masko, značaj pa pokopan pod ponaredkom? Če starost ne kaže več svoje ranljivosti, se sprašuje Hillman, "kje najti razloge za pietas, za zahtevo po iskrenosti, za željo po odgovorih na vprašanja, na katerih sloni družbena kohezija?". "Obraz starega človeka je dobrobit za skupnost" in samo bogu je dopuščeno, da skriva svoje obličje, to pa zato, ker je sam. V dobro družbe, sklene Hillman, "bi morda morali prepovedati lepotno kirurgijo in lifting razglasiti za zločin proti človeštvu", ker iz skupnosti izganja obraz starega človeka ter daje podporo in potuho tistemu mitu o mladosti, ki ima starost za predsobo smrti. Hillman nadaljuje:

"Dokler bomo imeli vsako tresavico, vsako jetrno pego na koži, vsako pozabljeno ime zgolj za znamenje propadanja, se bomo sami mučili vsaj toliko, kolikor nas muči starost. To, da si ob pogledu na lastni obraz v ogledalu neprestano ponavljamo negativno oceno tistega, kar se dogaja z nami, samo dokazuje moč ideje, ki je nadela uzde še zadnjemu delu našega življenja."

Ne naš obraz, naše misli so potrebne liftinga; ko ga bomo opravili, bomo spoznali, da so med vsakodnevnim sedenjem pred televizorjem in gledanjem prizorov, polnih lepote, mladosti, spolnosti in telesne popolnosti, v nas dozorele predstave, ki v resnici rabijo samo zato, da nam in drugim zakrivajo našo resnično osebnost, poteze, ki jim morda vse življenje nismo posvetili niti najmanjše pozornosti, ker so nas že od rojstva učili, da je važnejše nastopati kot biti. V veri, da je videz pomembnejši od bistva, tvegamo, da bomo umrli, ne da bi spoznali sami sebe in ne da bi se razodeli drugim.
