For the next 48 hours, we have an opportunity to really help fight global AIDS and extreme poverty. Right now, leaders in Congress are deciding how much life-saving assistance the U.S. will give to the world's poorest countries—and they need to hear from YOU!

Click here to sign ONE letter today and help save lives. : http://www.one.org/dia/organizationsONE/on...petition_KEY=99

Every signature counts—it means our leaders know that we believe doing even more is in America’s interests and it’s the right thing to do. Already, Americans from every state have stepped up and signed on, sending more than 108,000 letters asking Congress to support the President’s budget request and fully fund the fight against global AIDS and poverty!

Let’s keep up the positive pressure: Please sign the letter today! : http://www.one.org/dia/organizationsONE/on...petition_KEY=99

You did it! Working as ONE, call by call, you let our leaders know that you wanted America to do more to fight AIDS and extreme poverty-- and they heard you.

Late last week, the Senate agreed to two amendments that will add hundreds of millions of dollars to the fight against AIDS, TB and malaria and save the lives of mothers and children around the world.

Thank you for speaking up and standing by four Senators who worked together to do the right thing: save lives. Senators Santorum, Durbin, DeWine and Leahy demonstrated real leadership by doing something we don’t see everyday: reaching across political divides to help people in the world’s poorest countries lift themselves out of poverty. To see if YOUR Senators supported this life-saving funding, check out the ONE blog:

http://www.one.org/blog/

Your calls helped change minds and votes, proving that when we come together as ONE, we really can do more.

Thank you!

The ONE Team

P.S. Did you know that around the world, 1 billion people – 20% of the population – don’t have clean drinking water? Wednesday is World Water Day: http://www.worldwaterday2006.org/, so on your way to the water fountain at school or work, take ONE minute to learn more about the global water crisis and how you can get involved.

Dear ONE Member:

Two weeks ago, I asked you for your stories. ONE members answered the call and blew us away with thousands of riveting personal stories. For some, they were moments of humor -- for others they were stories of tragedy. But all of them made one point undeniably clear: Americans do care. I spent the last week reading through them; it’s been an honor to meet you. I want to share with you one of my favorites. Laura from Texas writes,

“I believe the fight against AIDS and global poverty is the fight of our generation. I recently asked my father where he was during the American Civil Rights movement, and if he felt a pull to be involved. As I listened to his answer, I thought, "What will my children hold me accountable for?" In the years to come, when my children ask me what I did to fight AIDS in Africa and how I tried to keep millions from needlessly dying of poverty, I want to have an answer. A real answer. This is the fight of my generation, and I will not pretend I don't understand what devastation will occur if I do not act. The ONE Campaign gives me a voice in this most important battle, and I intend to use it.”

This is the fight of our generation and ONE members are leading the way. Please share Laura's story with friends, family members, or colleagues that you think would be interested and might want to join the movement to end extreme poverty.

Read more ONE Member Stories on The ONE Blog and leave Laura a comment

If you haven’t already, sign the ONE Declaration below and add your name to ONE.

Thank you,

The most important thing you can do this year to end extreme poverty is vote on November 7th.

Extreme poverty impacts almost every aspect of our nation's foreign policy and contradicts our core values. Since ONE's launch two years ago, over 2.4 million people and 100 of the world's most respected humanitarian organizations have joined together in an unprecedented alliance to help the world's poorest nations. This November is the first time that we, as ONE members, will cast ballots and add our voices to the electoral process.

Pledge to vote and talk about fighting global poverty in your community.

Sign the ONE Voter pledge — a pledge to educate yourself, your community, and to vote on Election Day. Together, we are building an organized constituency of Americans who are taking concrete steps to end extreme poverty. Over the next six weeks, ONE members will host events in their homes, places of worship, and cities, educating themselves about how America can do even more to fight AIDS and poverty around the world.

We'll use the ONE Voter Pledge to reach out to people who want to learn how to get more involved. The pledge is a tool to raise global poverty awareness in communities across the country. Your one conversation or email might seem like a small contribution. But, in concert with millions of other ONE members, a pledge to vote and talk about global poverty is an important step toward enabling the world's poorest nations to rise out of poverty.

Pledge to vote and talk about fighting global poverty in your community.

To win the fight against extreme poverty, we must make it a national priority. Please vote and make your voice and your priorities heard in the democratic process.

Thanks,

Josh Peck, ONE.org

ISSUES

>>> AIDS

More than 38 million people around the world are infected by HIV/AIDS, 25 million in Africa alone. Left untreated, AIDS leads to an early death for people in their most productive years who are needed to raise crops and families, teach school and care for the sick. For more information about global AIDS click here. More>

>>> EXTREME POVERTY

Extreme poverty means living on less than $1 a day, unimaginable to us as Americans. ONE in five people around the world survives on this amount, with few opportunities to earn more. For more information about extreme poverty click here. More>

>>> AID

International assistance saves lives, directly helping and empowering individuals to help themselves. Increasing international assistance by an amount equal to just ONE percent of the U.S. budget will:

* Prevent 10 million children from becoming AIDS orphans

* Help get 104 million children into grade school

* Provide water to almost 900 million people around the globe.

* Save almost 6.5 million children under 5 from preventable deaths

* Build a better, safer world for all. More>

>>> EDUCATION

Parents in Malawi know just as well as parents in Missouri that education is crucial to their children's future. But around the world, 104 million children do not go to grade school, because their parents cannot afford fees, books or uniforms for all their children. For more information about getting children into school click here. More>

>>> WATER

ONE person in seven has no access to clean water for drinking, cooking or washing. In addition to spreading disease, this has multiple negative effects -- girls growing up in villages without water are far less likely to attend school because they're too busy spending hours walking to and from the nearest water source. For more information about clean water click here. More>

>>> CORRUPTION

While corruption is harmful to all governments, losing resources to corrupt leaders is particularly devastating in poor countries where every dollar lost results in one less child in school or one less well dug to provide clean water. Approaches like America's Millennium Challenge which direct assistance to honest governments are the most effective, as is channeling assistance through private (and faith-based) relief and development agencies. For more information about fighting corruption in the poorest countries click here. More>

>>> FOOD

Around the world, ONE person in seven goes to bed hungry each night. We need to address hunger not just by giving food, but helping farmers in poor countries grow better crops and helping countries build farm-to-market roads so farmers can supply distant cities. For more information about hunger click here. More>

>>> ORPHANS

18 million children have already lost one or both parents to AIDS, 12 million of them are in Africa alone. Unless more is done, there will be 25 million of these children around the world by 2010. We have the opportunity to help.

>>> TRADE

As much as people in poor countries appreciate development assistance, no one wants to rely on a handout -- they want to trade their way out of poverty -- but international rules make it difficult. A fair trade system would give people in poor countries the chance to earn their way out of poverty by participating in the world economy. For more information about trade rules click here. More>

>>> DEBT CANCELLATION

Every year Sub-Saharan Africa, the poorest region of the world, spends $14.5 billion dollars repaying debts to the world's richest countries and international institutions such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Though we've made efforts to relieve them of these unpayable debts, many poor countries still spend more each year on debt than on health care or education. For more information about debt cancellation click here. More>

Not every ONE member is receiving this email. Because of your active support, we need you at this critical time.

The ONE Campaign

Dear ONE Member:

On October 15, ONE members will gather in homes across the country to talk to local candidates and educate each other on extreme poverty, global AIDS and the coming November election. With your help, we will not only start a public conversation about global poverty, but we will set a new world record.

Will you open up your home to ONE members on October 15?

* October 15 is three weeks before the November election. At house parties across the country, ONE members will call their local candidates' offices and ask them what actions they have taken and plan to take on extreme poverty and global AIDS.

* October 15, the Global Day of Action on poverty, is the day when millions of people from over 30 countries will be coming together to literally ‘stand up’ against poverty. If enough people register to host and attend these events and others like it, we’ll be a part of new entry in the Guinness Book of World Records, “the most people ever standing up,” and put the spotlight on the fight against extreme poverty.

* House parties are of one of the most powerful tools we have for building the global poverty movement. Because of these events, thousands of people will be talking about ONE’s issues in living rooms across the country – and, at this critical time, we’ll move global AIDS and extreme poverty one step further into the national conversation.

Will you host a house party on the October 15 Day of Action?

Please take your support in the fight against extreme poverty to the next level by deciding to host a party in your home on Sunday, October 15th.

Thank you.

Dear ONE Member:

This week, the world’s biggest brands will throw their advertising muscle and millions of dollars in sales into the fight against global AIDS and extreme poverty. This same week thousands of ONE members will meet in living rooms and places of worship across the country to discuss global poverty in this election.

This is going to be a good week.

This Friday, Bono will be a guest on Oprah to help introduce (Product) RED to the United States. (RED) is the simple idea that what we buy can change the world. It’s not a charity. It’s a brand created to raise money for the Global Fund by teaming up with the world’s most iconic brands including Armani, Converse, GAP, and Motorola. Every (RED) product will raise not only money, but awareness.

On Sunday, ONE members are hosting house parties in preparation for the November election. Thousands of ONE members are coming together to celebrate the launch of (Product) RED, to add an entry to the Guinness Book of World Records for “the most people standing up” against poverty, and to call their candidates’ campaign offices to find out what they have done and what they plan to do to support the fight.

A crisis of this scale needs to be fought on multiple fronts to take advantage of the unique strengths of different parts of society. We need to gang up on the problem and this week is an important opportunity to come together.

Please sign up to attend an October 15th House Party in your area or host one of your own

This week, there are three things I am going to do: watch Bono introduce (Product) Red on Oprah Friday, wear a (Product) RED t-shirt (but not all weekend), and attend an October 15th ONE House Party. I hope you will join me, because we can make this an important moment for the global poverty movement.

Thanks,

Josh Peck, ONE.org

Dear ONE Member,

Everyone here at ONE headquarters is both energized and exhausted. Last night, we huddled up around a computer and watched the first rough cut of our biggest secret for the past two months -- a new ONE TV Spot. With 578 events and counting registered for this Sunday (already a new record for ONE), we know Sunday’s going to be a big day. We also know the best place to show a ONE Spot sneak preview is a living room full of ONE supporters.

They won’t let me send this email out if I give too much away before the sneak preview, but I can tell you a few things. The spot includes one or more of the following: Hollywood actors, faith leaders, a professional athlete, a musician, a Republican, and a Democrat. Most importantly, they all join together with everyday Americans to pledge "ONE Vote" to help fight global AIDS and extreme poverty.

After watching the sneak preview of the new "ONE Vote" Spot and learning more about the issues, ONE members will pick up the phone and call candidates’ campaign offices on both sides of the political aisle. We’re going to ask them what actions they’ve taken and plan to take in the fight against global poverty.

Sign up to attend a ONE House Party and watch a sneak preview of the new "ONE Vote" Spot.

For many of us, it’ll be the first time we’ve ever made a call like this. That’s because this is new. This is the first time over 2.4 million people have ever organized around global AIDS and extreme poverty. We are making history, and together, we can make poverty history.

Thanks,

Josh Peck, ONE.org

P.S. If you haven’t already registered to vote, there’s still time if you act quickly! Get registered online and pass this along to your family and friends as well!

Last Sunday was an enormous victory for the ONE community and the fight against global poverty. At 689 House Parties in all 50 states, over 6,000 ONE members gathered around speakerphones to call candidates and elected officials.

Our question to them was simple: What have you done to fight global poverty, and what do you plan to do? And our message to them was clear: Americans care.

This Monday we’ll premiere a bold new television spot that takes our message one step further: our commitment to extreme poverty rises above party lines, and we will vote. (See below for details.) Your calls and this ad are a powerful one-two punch that will help mark 2006 as an historic year in the fight against global poverty.

Please take a moment to view some photos from Sunday’s House Parties and other events from our friends around the globe that made this week one for the record books.

ONE members gave Sunday’s House Parties the highest rating in our history. Here’s how Elizabeth, a retired educator, ONE member, and volunteer House Party host described the phone call at her event:

"Talking to my Senator and hearing his enthusiasm (as he already knew a lot about the ONE Organization) made the party a great success. My friends felt like they were actually affecting policy and procedure on the global-level for a change."

Take a minute to appreciate your accomplishments this week, and the phenomenal work of our many friends around the globe. But also remember, this historic week is just the beginning of our great campaign to end extreme poverty, and the best is yet to come.

View this Week in Photos

Thank you,

Josh Peck, ONE.org

At the 689 October 15 ONE house parties, ONE members see a sneak peak of the new ONE Vote TV Spot.

The spot will make its world premiere on Monday, October 23, between 9 and 10pm on MTV, MTV2, MTVu, MTVTR3S, Comedy Central, CMT, VH1, Spike, Nick@Night and TV Land.

http://action.one.org/dia/organizationsONE/one/images/RunningInTheSaharaLogo.jpg

Right now, three human beings are attempting the impossible – running 4,000 miles across the Sahara Desert to raise awareness for the 1.2 billion people around the world who don’t have access to clean water. They will run 50 miles a day - for around 80 days - an amazing feat of human will and endurance.

Get updates on the run and join me in the fight for clean water

Earlier this spring, my friends at the ONE Campaign and DATA brought me to Zambia and South Africa, where I witnessed extreme poverty and the role that clean drinking water plays in getting millions out of danger. I learned that a child dies every 15 seconds due to diseases from dirty water.

Upon my return, I wanted to do something.

Through some friends, I learned about three men who will undertake a quest so amazing and symbolic that it could do an immense amount of good for Africans in extreme poverty. In a bold expedition that has never been attempted - 3 men, from 3 nations will run from the Atlantic coast of Senegal, through Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Libya, to the Red Sea in Egypt.

My colleagues, including James Moll - a great filmmaker who won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1999 - are documenting and promoting the expedition in our project called "Running the Sahara". As part of this effort, we've started a charitable initiative called H2O Africa, in a large part to raise awareness for clean water programs on the continent.

Get updates on the run and join me in the fight for clean water

One of the reasons I got involved in the project was because of the day I spent with a 14 year-old girl in Zambia earlier this year. I walked two miles with her to the closest water source, a well outside her village. I asked her if she wanted to stay in her village when she grew up, and her face exploded into a huge smile. The translator said to me, "She is being very shy...she says that she wants to move to big city - Lusaka - she wants to be a nurse." And it was clear to me at that moment that if this well were not there for her, she would never even be able to entertain the concept of planning for the future - she would have been trying to survive just for that day.

This one well was giving hope to thousands of people in the surrounding area, and this hope translates into something concrete - that girl can now fulfill a dream to become a nurse, and can become an economic contributor to the Zambian economy.

Running the Sahara is happening NOW. These guys are there and they are going for it. And we want the world to sit up and take notice. These guys are my heroes, and I want to do whatever I can to support them and their mission.

Please join me

Thank you,

Matt Damon, ONE Member

P.S. Stay tuned! Next week ONE is sending a small team to Mali to catch up with the runners. The team will upload video and blog reports about the progress of the expedition!

Oxfam’s Fast for a World Harvest

For some, banquet means lots of food. But for many, the only meal served is hunger. Feast or famine - it's the luck of the draw.

As you give thanks this holiday season, share the idea of an Oxfam Hunger Banquet with your family and friends. Visit Oxfam’s Fast for a World Harvest site.

Today, the Thursday before Thanksgiving, thousands of Americans are educating their friends and family about the more than 850 million people who routinely go to sleep hungry.

Share This Simple Idea With Your Family

If 20 people sit down at your table, representing the world’s population:

3 would be served a gourmet, multi-course meal, while sitting at decorated table and a cushioned chair.

5 would eat rice and beans with a fork and sit on a simple cushion

12 would wait in line to receive a small portion of rice that they would eat with their hands while sitting on the floor.

The true power of an Oxfam Hunger Banquet is that as you eat your meal, unlike the real world, you see what’s on everyone else’s plate.

Unless we take action now, up to 150,000 Africans, mostly women, could lose their jobs.

The "third-country fabric" provision of African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) must be renewed before the end of the year. This provision helps African businesses create jobs by allowing them to import fabric that they can then make into clothes to sell in the United States.

In September, ONE Members sent over 160,000 letters to members of Congress. We took out a full page ad in Roll Call, a daily newspaper read by members of Congress, with the names of ONE members who supported renewal of this important provision. We can now build on that momentum by reminding our representatives about this pressing issue today.

Please take a moment to write your representatives

AGOA passed in 2000 and increased trade opportunities in Africa giving some of the world's poorest people new opportunities to earn a steady income, send their children to school, and build a hopeful future. But the crucial "third-country fabric" provision is set to expire next year.

Our action showed Congress that we support renewing this provision that's helping Africans continue to work their way out of poverty. Our efforts helped put this on the negotiating table, and now we have one last chance to ensure that it's passed before this Congress adjourns.

Please take a moment to write your representatives

Without it, hope for many who have benefited from AGOA will fade and tens of thousands could lose their opportunity to work their way out of poverty.

Thank you for your voice,

Josh Peck, ONE.org

Congratulations

Dear ONE Member,

You did it. You were heard. You got results.

Last month, I became CEO of the ONE campaign. When I began this job, I knew we had a grassroots army 2.4 million members strong. And I knew the success of ONE depended on each of you. This week, you showed just how strong you are.

Thanks to your work, the U.S. Senate secured the $1 billion dollars in poverty-fighting funds you sought, and they went a step further, allocating an additional $450 million in the fight to save hundreds of thousands of lives. Every ONE member made it happen.

Having worked on Capitol Hill for a long time, I know first-hand the pressures on Congress for funding. Being heard amid the intense lobbying is hard. Many special interests have vast resources to break through. But millions facing life-threatening situations living in extreme poverty have no voice. You came together and spoke for them. You gave them a voice. Lives will be saved, and our country is stronger for your leadership.

After hearing that $1 billion dollars was at stake in December, ONE members sent over 200,000 letters to members of Congress urging them to sign on to Durbin-Brownback "Dear Colleague" letter. 42 senators signed on to these letters and gave our champions the leverage they needed to secure this life-saving funding.

Congratulations. I look forward to writing you again about our plans for the year ahead and the future of ONE. As we build from this success, we can change who gets heard in Washington and give voice to those most in need around the world. You did it.

Thank you,

Susan McCue, ONE.org

Hollywood is returning it to politics in a big way with more than $1 million in ad time -- for free. The One campaign -- a coalition of non-profit humanitarian organizations aimed at allocating one more percent of the U.S. annual budget to anti-poverty causes -- has secured more than $1 million in free ad time on most of the major networks last night, in addition to getting the front page on the RNC, DNC , YouTube, MySpace, AOL and Yahoo! home pages today. The 30-second spot appeared on MTV Networks channels last night followed by time on CMT, Comedy Central, MTVu and News Corp's channels until Election Day and on the big screen at Times Square.

Every morning 77 million children don't go to school, and not because they don't want to. 77 million children go without school because neither their families nor their governments have the resources to provide them with a basic education. Without education, these children are trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, hunger, and AIDS.

Write a letter to your member of Congress asking them to co-sponsor the Education for All Act.

----

Having worked in politics for a long time, I've heard thousands of speeches in my life, but none as moving as Bono's at the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC. It was profound. It was a spiritual call to arms against injustices that we -- together as ONE -- can end. He elevated every person in the room to rise up and do something. See for yourself.

The speech is now available in a small, beautiful book called On the Move. Proceeds from On the Move support The ONE Campaign. Here is one of my favorite passages:

"God is in the slums, in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house. God is in the silence of a mother who has infected her child with a virus that will end both their lives. God is in the cries heard under the rubble of war. God is in the debris of wasted opportunity and lives, and God is with us if we are with them."

The president is back from his trip to Africa and, because of your

actions, we won't have to wait very long for the next presidential trip to

that continent.

That's because more than 100,000 ONE members signed our petition asking

the presidential candidates to pledge to visit Africa in their first term

and the candidates heard you loud and clear.

The petitions have been delivered and we now have solid commitments from

Senator Clinton, Governor Huckabee, Senator McCain and Senator Obama that,

if elected, they will visit Africa in their first term. Congratulations!

This is your victory and you can read the candidates' responses here:
